NAPIBOWRIWEE 2014: Wrap Up & Contest Winners! (May 8)
What time did everyone wake up? Did everyone survive our Sixth Annual National Picture Book Writing Week? 🙂
How was everyone’s final Day 7? I’d love to hear your comments below. My DAY 7 UPDATE: It was my first truly really free day. No social obligations, no rehearsals, no writing deadlines, no errands. Ironically, I struggled a bit because I think I’ve been so used to writing under a lot of pressure and tight deadlines and very little time. Suddenly, I had all these long leisurely hours to write. Talk about irony! But I finally decided to write a foodie picture book since I’m always posting pictures of my food on social media. It turned out to be a fun book. And then I realized… the voice felt very middle grade to me. So who knows… this may now turn into a chapter book or future MG novel.
As promised, although NAPIBOWRIWEE 2014 is done, I wanted to post a wrap-up blog and announce our contest winners!
NOTE: WINNERS WILL BE CONTACTED INDIVIDUALLY BY EMAIL TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS OF PRIZE MAILINGS.
BTW – I wish EVERYONE could win the prizes in this contest. But I hope you STILL feel you won no matter what because you have at least one, if not SEVEN, completed first drafts of picture books that you can submit later for publication. That is the true prize! 🙂
Next year’s 2015 NAPIBOWRIWEE will take place May 1-7, 2015. So mark your calendars! Until then, you can treat yourself to a souvenir at our store which is open all year round here: http://www.cafepress.com/paulayoonapibowriweeclassic
Keep reading after the break to find out who our contest winners are! 🙂
2014 NAPIBOWRIWEE CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENTS
All winners were picked at random from a bowl. As proof, here is Oreo contemplating the bowl of names to make sure everything is in order for the random drawing…
To ensure fairness, two co-judges were also selected to randomly select winners’ names from the bowl to ensure fairness and a level playing field…
Charlotte also took her role as co-judge very seriously…
Anyway, with three judges making sure our contest was fairly conducted, I am proud to announce the 2014 winners of our annual NAPIBOWRIWEE door prize random drawing contest! Here we go… DRUM ROLL, PLEASE…

Thank you everyone for your participation! If anyone wants to post about their Day 7 experience or their experience in general this past week, please do so in the COMMENTS section below.
I will post one last blog on May 9, 2014 with the official announcement on when the 2015 NAPIBOWRIWEE will take place and some other announcements.Â
Then starting May 10, 2014, please go back to my OTHER blog where I post about my life, my cats, my music, and my writing… not necessarily in that order. 🙂 You can read my blog here: https://paulayoo.com/blogÂ
And you can also follow me on TWITTER here:Â https://twitter.com/paulayoo
And HAPPY WRITING! Or actually, maybe HAPPY NAPPING! 🙂 Take a break! And as always… WRITE LIKE YOU MEAN IT! 🙂
Thank you, Paula for putting this on!
If anyone who participated is interested in workshopping manuscripts and continuing with an online critique group, please check us out. We’ve created a web application specifically to support small, private online critique groups. The site provides a structure and automated process for running critique groups. It can also help you find a group with other PB writers if you don’t have one now. The site is in beta this month and you can check it out at beta.inkedvoices.com. And congrats again to everyone who participated in this year’s NAPIBOWRIWEE!
Awesome! I’ll have to check it out. 🙂
Looks interesting, I’ll check it out.
Thank you for the autographed book! YAY! I already have Good Enough, Shining Star, and Sixteen Years so now I can add Twenty-two Cents to my Paula collection. : )
Thoroughly enjoyed my first time with all y’all here at NAPIBOWRIWEE! Now I have seven drafts to get me through those lazy hazy crazy days of summer–and that’s a HUGE win, believe me!
Yay! Congratulations to all the prize-winners and to all the participants who gave it their best!
For myself, I am disappointed I didn’t meet my goal. But I will not let that stop me from celebrating my successes:
I logged plenty of writing hours.
I completed three drafts that are worth revising.
I made time to write even though this was a week of unexpected family issues and lapses of concentration.
I learned more about the diversity issue and dreamed of how I might make a positive contribution to the problem.
I learned things about my writing-self which will see me through writing road blocks in the future.
So, thank-you, Paula. Thank-you to all the guests who shared their experiences.
See you all next year. Same bat-time. Same bat-channel.
Congrats prize winners and HUGE THANKS to Paula for doing this. I love setting aside a week to work on new picture book ideas. 🙂
Congrats to all the winners!! Oh, I think I’m one of them. LOL! And even if I weren’t, I’d say getting to see photos of your gorgeous kitties makes us all winners! Writing? Were we supposed to be writing? Hah!
Paula, many, many thanks for this super fun challenge! I think I will actually be able to use at least half the stories I wrote.
xoxox
Congrads to everyone. If you took up the challenge and wrote one draft, you still won.
Oreo! You rock, buddy. I had told one of my kids that I need the tote bag. Did you see what I won? Besides his other fab qualities, could Oreo be psychic? Now I can order something else from the NaPiBoWirWee shop.
Paula, besides the Scrivener and Scapple, you’ve given me so much this week! Hugs, hugs, hugs! You are the loveliest of the lovelies! Inside and out! xoxoxoxo
P.S. Is it next year yet? 🙂
Thank you, Oreo, Beethoven and Charlotte for making sure the drawing was random… and to Paula for drawing my name. I’m looking forward to reading Twenty-two Cents!
Congratulations to all the other prize winners!
Congrats winners and participants!
However you choose to celebrate (chocolate, napping, catnip, revising) enjoy your NaPiBoWriWee victory!
P.S. I gotta tell you that Oreo, Beethoven, and Charlotte are ADORABLE.
Congrats to the prize winners!
I enjoyed participating again this year, thanks to Paula for organizing this motivating event.
I have 6 and 1/2 drafts. Yesterday, I started writing a story, but the set-up is too long for a PB. Must get to the problem a little quicker, or maybe it will be a chapter book or early reader. We’ll see.
Happy tweaking and revising everyone!
Hi Paula,
I see I am a winner of a personally-signed copy of your book SHINING STAR: THE ANNA MAY WONG STORY! Thanks! However, I have not received an email from you. Did it get lost in cyber-space???
Congrats to all the other winners, too!!
Congrats! I will be emailing everyone shortly. Stay tuned!
Thanks everyone again for participating. FYI I just emailed everyone to get their addresses so I can send out the prizes. It may take a few weeks so please be patient. I’ll be sure to email everyone individually to confirm when the prizes are mailed out. xo P.
Congrats to the Winners! 🙂
I learned
1. that writing a Picture Book First Draft everyday when you don’t have a story already nagging at you is hard,
2. that Sloppy Drafts can be downright awful and still have valuable content at the same time, and
3. that I have an awesome, patient critique group.
Thank you so much for my prize, Paula! I think I had an “in” with one of the kitty-cats sharing my name. It must have been karma for me to win a PB during NaPiBoWrWee as I had a critique at the NESCBWI on Saturday (5/3) for one of my manuscripts which sent me into high gear revising it significantly…Soon to be included in an anthology that my monthly critique group is self-publishing…and then (gulp) to be submitted to a few potential publishers in the big wide world.
Congratulations first and mostly to those who wrote and finished 7 rough drafts. What an achievement!!! And, a big hand to those who wrote any amount of drafts this week. I know how hard it is to get things done..
And, to those who one the prizes…you lucky dogs. Congratulations.
Thanks Paula. I am personally grateful for this effect.
